Porto-Novo, the capital of Benin, is preparing to host the “Great Mask Parade” on July 25 and 26, 2026, as part of the Mask Festival, one of the country’s most prominent cultural and artistic events.
This procession is one of the most important events hosted by the festival, in which traditional masks from various regions of Benin participate, along with cultural contributions from other countries, in an artistic display that embodies the richness and diversity of African heritage.
Celebrating identity and folk heritage
The procession passes through a designated route in the streets of Porto-Novo, giving visitors the opportunity to discover the cultural diversity and inherited traditions that form an essential part of Benin's national identity.
Masks hold a special place in many African societies, where they are associated with spiritual traditions, popular celebrations and traditional rituals, and represent a symbol of cultural and historical identity.
The festival allows the public to become acquainted with the various forms of cultural and artistic expression that reflect the vitality of the country's intangible heritage.
Porto Novo transforms into an open-air theater
During the festival, the city of Porto Novo transforms into an open space for celebrations and artistic performances, where popular traditions meet contemporary arts in a festive atmosphere that brings together residents and visitors.
The procession provides an opportunity to showcase cultural and creative diversity, as traditional music, dances, costumes and masks blend together in a scene that reflects the richness of Benin's and Africa's heritage.
The event also contributes to raising awareness of the importance of preserving cultural heritage and passing it on to new generations.
Supporting tourism and the cultural economy
The festival organizers believe that these events contribute to revitalizing cultural tourism and enhancing Porto Novo’s position as a destination for heritage and artistic events in West Africa.
The event is expected to attract large numbers of local and international visitors, supporting economic activities related to tourism and cultural industries.
The festival also reflects Benin’s interest in preserving its cultural heritage and using it as a tool to promote development and national identity.
Free entry for the public
The organizers announced that attendance at the "Great Mask Parade" events will be free and open to the public, with the aim of encouraging community participation and giving the largest possible number of visitors the opportunity to enjoy this unique cultural event.
The festival is expected to be an occasion to celebrate living heritage and promote cultural dialogue, at a time when African efforts to preserve and showcase traditional heritage on the international stage are increasing.
