The announcement was made by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, who affirmed that the selection of Obasanjo reflects confidence in his extensive political experience and proven track record in managing difficult dialogues. Nigeria He pointed out that the current stage requires leadership with historical experience in calming tensions and building bridges between the parties.

The mediator's tasks and priorities for this phase

The new envoy’s main task is to lead mediation efforts between the conflicting parties in the Horn of Africa countries, and to open channels of serious dialogue that lead to long-term peaceful solutions, with a focus on building trust between governments and local communities affected by the conflicts.

Obasanjo will also work in coordination with regional organizations, most notably the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), along with civil society and international partners, to ensure the integration of political, humanitarian and security efforts within a purely African vision for addressing the region’s crises.

A long track record in African mediations

Obasanjo is one of the most prominent political figures in Africa, having served as President of Nigeria for two different terms, and accumulating considerable experience in managing sensitive regional issues.

He played a pivotal role in previous mediation efforts between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front, which contributed to the 2022 ceasefire and paved the way for subsequent peace talks.

Expectations of advancing reconciliation efforts

The appointment was welcomed by regional and international parties who see African leadership of peace processes as a crucial factor in achieving stability.

Analysts believe that this step could contribute to reducing armed tensions and stimulating comprehensive political reconciliation, despite the complex challenges associated with multiple conflict zones and the entanglement of regional interests.
