Burkina Faso's Prime Minister, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, inaugurated the Dorro water production center on Friday in the commune of Kirsé, Bassouri province, Yagha region. This initiative aims to expand access to drinking water and improve the quality of basic services in rural and semi-urban areas.

The project comes within the framework of the Water Supply and Sanitation Program (PAEA), funded by the World Bank, and embodies the government's efforts to enhance water security and ensure access to clean drinking water for as many citizens as possible close to their places of residence.

A production capacity of 10 thousand cubic meters per day

The center relies on water from the Douro dam, with a daily production of 10,000 cubic meters of drinking water, to supply the cities of Yako, Korsé, and Boussé, in addition to eight villages: Douro, Boungouan, Nianzi, Petit Sambaré, Nongo, Arbolè, Zoungbita, and Pèlègtenga.

The project's cost exceeded 15.5 billion African francs, and it was carried out by the Burkina Faso company ASI-BF. The work included the construction of a water treatment plant with a capacity of 500 cubic meters per hour, as well as two treated water reservoirs with a capacity of 1,000 cubic meters each in Douro and Yako, three pumping stations, three water towers, and seven simplified systems to supply beneficiary villages with drinking water.

149-kilometer distribution network

The project will provide drinking water to more than 138,000 people in its current phase, through 112 public taps and 2,200 household connections, and a distribution network extending nearly 149 kilometers.

The government expects the number of beneficiaries to rise to about 250,000 people by 2030, with urban and population growth in the project's coverage areas.

Praise for World Bank support

The governor of Yagha Province, Thomas Yamba, expressed his appreciation for the project's completion on behalf of the residents, emphasizing that it represents a significant transformation in improving living conditions. The local authorities also pledged to maintain the infrastructure and ensure the sustainability of services.

For his part, the World Bank's Resident Representative in Burkina Faso, Hamoud Abdel Wahab Kamel, affirmed the institution's continued support for development projects that enhance basic services and promote sustainable development efforts in the country.

Government: Water is a fundamental right, not a privilege

The Prime Minister described the Dorro water production center as a historic and strategic investment reflecting the vision of the government led by President Captain Ibrahim Traoré to improve citizens' living standards.

He affirmed that the project will contribute to solving the problem of obtaining drinking water sustainably, stressing that water is a basic right for all citizens and not a privilege. He also called on the Ministry of Water, the National Office of Water and Sanitation, and local communities to cooperate in order to protect the facilities and ensure their continued efficient operation.

The Prime Minister concluded his visit by inspecting a number of water distribution facilities in the cities of Yako and Gursi, affirming that the government will continue to invest in infrastructure projects and basic services, which will contribute to reducing the development gap and improving the quality of life throughout the country.
