Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune confirmed on Saturday that the legislative elections held on Thursday were characterized by ”fair democratic competition,” praising the efforts that accompanied their organization.
Tebboune's statements came in a message on the occasion of commemorating the 64th anniversary of the Independence Day and the restoration of national sovereignty, which falls on July 5th of each year. He said: “As we live in the atmosphere of commemorating this immortal anniversary, which coincides with the events of an important constitutional entitlement in the path of building true democracy, I commend the efforts made to ensure the success of the legislative elections held two days ago.”.

He added that these efforts “contributed to bringing fair democratic competition to the election campaign, and to ensuring that citizens can exercise their right to vote in a calm and favorable environment.”.
The Algerian President had affirmed, after casting his vote in the elections, that the country had overcome “the stage of tampering with voters” ballots and manipulating election results.".
Algerians went to the polls on Thursday to elect members of the National People's Assembly, the lower house of parliament. The Independent National Elections Authority is expected to announce the preliminary results within 72 hours of receiving the last vote tally reports.
The Independent High Authority for Elections stated in a statement released on Saturday that it continues to receive results sheets from various governorates of the country, in addition to polling stations for the Algerian community abroad.
The second legislative elections in Algeria
More than 24 million voters were called to participate in Algeria's second legislative elections since the popular Hirak movement in 2019, which ended with the resignation of the late President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
Candidates are competing for 407 seats in the National People's Assembly, including 12 seats allocated to represent Algerians residing abroad.
Algeria celebrates Independence Day and the regaining of national sovereignty on July 5th each year, commemorating the country's declaration of independence in 1962 after more than 132 years of French colonization, following a liberation war that lasted approximately eight years between 1954 and 1962.
