South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit made new government changes that included the Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Culture, Museums, and Heritage, as well as appointing a new presidential envoy to the Great Lakes region, as part of a restructuring of a number of executive and diplomatic positions.

The President issued two presidential decrees this evening, which included changes in a number of ministerial and leadership positions. He relieved Dr. Madut Biar Yiel from his position as Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, and appointed Changkuoth Bichok as the new minister for the ministry.

In a simultaneous move, the President issued another decree appointing Dr. Madut Biar Yel as Presidential Envoy to the Great Lakes Region. This position is concerned with following up on regional files and strengthening relations with countries in the region, indicating the utilization of his expertise in supporting regional diplomatic efforts.

The Ministry of Culture, Museums, and Heritage was also affected by the changes, as the President dismissed Amir Madol Majak from his position as Undersecretary of the Ministry and appointed Julia Atir Wantok as the new Undersecretary.

The African Union affirms its support for a peaceful political transition in South Sudan.

The presidential decrees were announced via the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), and the appointments and dismissals will take effect from the date of their issuance.

These changes come at a time when the South Sudanese government continues to make periodic changes in executive positions, as part of efforts aimed at enhancing the efficiency of government institutions and reallocating responsibilities in line with the priorities of the current stage, especially in the education, culture, and regional relations sectors.

Observers believe that the appointment of a presidential envoy to the Great Lakes region reflects Juba's interest in strengthening its diplomatic presence in the region, given the security and political challenges facing some countries in the region, in addition to the importance of regional coordination on security, development, and economic integration issues.

The Great Lakes region is one of the important arenas in South Sudan's foreign policy, given the overlapping interests with neighboring countries and the necessity imposed by regional developments to strengthen channels of dialogue and diplomatic cooperation during the next phase.
