Benin’s President Patrice Talon is one of the most prominent African figures who combined success in the business world and political work, after he managed, in a few years, to bring about a remarkable economic and developmental transformation in his country, benefiting from his long experience in the business sector, especially in the fields of agriculture and the cotton industry.
Before coming to power in 2016, Talon was ranked among the most prominent businessmen in Benin, with his wealth estimated at more than 200 billion African francs, which he amassed from his investments in the cotton and agricultural inputs trade, a sector that formed the backbone of the Beninese economy for many years.

Since taking office, Talon has launched a series of economic projects and reforms aimed at modernizing infrastructure and stimulating domestic and foreign investment. In nearly a decade, he oversaw the construction of more than 3,000 kilometers of roads, a move that has significantly improved transportation and trade within the country.
The President of Benin also focused on promoting local manufacturing, through the creation of the Glo-Djigbe Industrial Zone, known as GDIZ, which includes more than 20 factories in multiple sectors, and has contributed to providing thousands of job opportunities for young people, in addition to supporting manufacturing industries related to agriculture.
As part of his plan to develop the local economy, Talon worked to create modern markets and regulate domestic trade, while the agricultural sector witnessed a major boom that made Benin one of the leading African countries producing and manufacturing cotton, with a focus on local manufacturing rather than just exporting raw materials.
In terms of services, the Talon government has focused on developing the health sector, establishing a world-class health center known as CHIC, with the aim of providing advanced medical services to citizens within the country and reducing the need to travel abroad for treatment.
The energy sector also saw the implementation of new projects to generate electricity and improve supplies, in parallel with the modernization of the vital port of Cotonou, and the development of plans to establish a new international airport in Glo-Djigbe to support investment and trade.
Despite the criticism and political and economic challenges he faced during his rule, Patrice Talon is still regarded as one of the most prominent African leaders who successfully used their economic expertise to bring about tangible developmental changes within their country.
