Zambian Vice President Mutale Nalumango and seven members of her team narrowly escaped harm after a military helicopter they were traveling in crashed shortly after takeoff.

Nalumango said the incident occurred as the group was leaving an election rally in Nakonde, a town in northeastern Zambia, and the cause of the accident is still unclear.

Routine medical examination

And according to an official government statement, Nalumanjo underwent a routine medical examination as a precautionary measure following the incident, and was subsequently discharged in good health.

This incident comes amid an active election campaign ahead of Zambia's general elections, scheduled for August 13.

President Hakainde Hichilema is widely expected to win a second term.
