Russia escalates its accusations against Ukraine regarding Africa. Is Kyiv seeking to target Moscow's allies on the continent?

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov escalated his rhetoric towards Ukraine, accusing Kyiv of engaging in activities aimed at destabilizing a number of countries. African  Moscow's ally, by intervening in internal conflicts and supporting parties that oppose legitimate governments, in the latest chapter of the growing geopolitical rivalry between Russia and Ukraine in the African continent.

Direct accusations during a press conference

Lavrov made these accusations during a press conference following his talks with Burundian Foreign Minister, Édouard Nduwimana, affirming what he described as ”blatant foreign interference” in African affairs, foremost among them the security developments in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Russian minister said that the legitimate government in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the support of Burundi, is facing attacks by the “M23" movement, claiming that the group is receiving support from foreign entities, including Ukrainian elements, according to his statements.

Moscow: Kyiv seeks to strengthen its influence on the continent

Lavrov pointed out that Ukraine is trying to expand its political presence in Africa by intervening in a number of conflicts, considering that the goal of these moves is to strengthen Kyiv's influence on the continent, as well as to exert pressure on countries that maintain close relations with Russia.

Moscow is monitoring developments

He added that what he described as Ukrainian moves are not limited to a specific country, but extend to several regions witnessing security tensions, emphasizing that Moscow is closely monitoring these developments.

Ongoing statements about Ukrainian mercenaries

These statements come just one day after Lavrov made remarks in the Mozambican capital of Maputo, in which he accused Ukraine of recruiting mercenaries to carry out terrorist attacks in some African countries, considering these activities a threat to stability and security on the continent.

These statements reflect the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian competition for influence in Africa, at a time when the continent is witnessing increasing interest from international powers, whether through economic and military cooperation or by strengthening political and security partnerships, amid escalating tensions related to the Russian-Ukrainian war and its repercussions on the international stage.
