The Syrian capital, Damascus, on Tuesday, two consecutive explosions near the Ministry of Tourism building, coinciding with French President Emmanuel Macron’s historic visit to Syria—the first visit by a head of state from a major Western country since the political upheaval the country experienced in late 2024.

What happened at the explosion site?

According to the Syrian Ministry of Interior, the two explosions resulted from two improvised explosive devices, one of which was hidden inside a parked car, while the second was placed inside a garbage bin near the Ministry of Tourism.

The location is outside the security perimeter.

The ministry clarified that the location is outside the security perimeter designated for the French President's movements, confirming that the visit's program was not affected by the incident.

The bombings resulted in 18 injuries, including four police officers, while ambulance and fire crews rushed to the scene, and security forces imposed a security cordon to conduct investigations and search for those involved.

A Historic Visit and Political Messages

Why does timing raise so many questions?

Observers believe that the occurrence of the two explosions simultaneously with a visit of this level carries security and political implications, as it highlights the continuation of security challenges despite the transformations the country has witnessed.

And as of yet, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, while Syrian authorities continue their investigations to uncover those responsible for the operation and their motives.

Media reports indicated that the two explosions occurred near the Four Seasons Hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron was staying, but his convoy had already left the area before they happened and was unharmed. The visit and its official program continued as normal, sending a message emphasizing the continuation of diplomatic movements despite the security challenges that Syria continues to face.
