A surprising return after a century of absence: a mysterious bird on the African coast

Remarkable scientific discovery

Written by Omnia Hassan

In a remarkable scientific discovery, a team of birdwatchers successfully documented the appearance of the "Rusty Jungle Lark," commonly known as the "Rusty Lark," in  Africa After an absence of about 95 years.

The bird was spotted within its natural habitat in the coastal region. African In an event that is the first of its kind since the 1930s, when his last confirmed appearance was recorded.

Mysterious bird outside the scope of study

This species has long been considered one of the most mysterious and least scientifically informed birds. It lives in dry savannah and semi-desert environments stretching between Chad, Niger and Sudan, areas that are difficult to access and suffer from security and political challenges, which have kept them out of the sight of researchers for long periods.

Scientific sources indicate that this geographical ambiguity was a major reason for the bird's disappearance from observation, but not necessarily its extinction.

Rediscovery is a field-based scientific achievement.

An international research team, in collaboration with local experts, managed to spot a live individual of this bird inside a nature reserve in Chad, and document it with photographs and detailed observations.

This documentation is the first direct visual evidence of its existence in nearly a century, reopening the study of this species and giving scientists an opportunity to better understand its environment and behavior.

Physical characteristics that distinguish it from others

The Rust Lark has unique characteristics, most notably its long tail without white sides, and its reddish-brown color.

It also has a slender, two-toned beak, brownish-grey legs, and reddish-brown eyes. Measuring between 13 and 15 centimeters in length, it is slightly smaller than some common larks, and these features are key to distinguishing it from similar species in its environment.

Why wasn't it classified as extinct?

Despite its long absence from records, this bird has not been listed among extinct species, due to its wide range and the difficulty of studying its habitats.

Experts confirm that the absence of monitoring does not necessarily mean final disappearance, especially in scientifically unexplored areas. Estimates indicate that the bird may be rare on a general level, but is locally common in some areas.

The need for further research

The rediscovery of the rust lark highlights the importance of intensifying field studies in remote areas to understand biodiversity and protect unknown species. At a time when the risk of extinction is increasing globally, such discoveries stand out as evidence that nature still holds many secrets.
