An advanced anti-drone armored vehicle was spotted in Wajir County, coinciding with the president's visit. Kenyan William Rutto and senior government officials attended the 2026 Independence Day celebrations and their tour of the province.

It was later revealed that the vehicle was an OW5-A50 anti-drone system, a laser-based, mobile defensive weapon designed to protect public gatherings, critical infrastructure, and government convoys from aerial threats.

Security forces maintained a state of high alert due to the region being exposed to terrorist attacks and cross-border armed activity along the Somali border.

Norinco (China North Industries Group) unveiled the OW5-A50 system in July 2025, publicly showcasing its capabilities at exhibitions.

This system uses radar, electro-optical sensors, and directed laser beams to detect, track, and neutralize drones and other low-altitude aerial threats.

Disabling drone electronics without the need to launch missiles

This system, mounted on a highly mobile (8x8) military truck, can disable the electronics of drones without the need to fire conventional missiles.

It is capable of rapidly engaging multiple targets and disabling drone electronics over several kilometers, and was specifically designed to counter drone swarms and other unmanned aerial threats.

According to the specifications published at its unveiling, the OW5-A50 system operates independently, without the need for external power sources, and can be rapidly deployed to secure strategic locations.

Its high mobility and speed in targeting objectives make it suitable for deployment in areas with complex security challenges.

The increasing use of drones

Reports indicate that the OW5-A50 system is part of a growing global class of laser air defense platforms, designed to counter the increasing use of drones in surveillance, attacks, and other security operations.

Kenya's use of Chinese-made weapons reflects such a significant event as this cooperation between the two countries in the defense sector, alongside existing trade, financial and infrastructure agreements.
