New Mangabwani Port: A massive maritime project that enhances Tanzania's regional standing

A strategic move that will redraw the trade map in Tanzania and East Africa

Tanzania has begun implementing the Mangapwani Integrated Port project on Unguja Island with funding estimated at around $300 million, in a move that is considered one of the largest maritime projects in the country in recent years.

This project is part of a development vision aimed at strengthening maritime infrastructure and transforming Tanzania into a pivotal logistics hub in the East African region.

The new port is expected to contribute to reshaping regional trade, especially with the increasing demand for modern ports capable of accommodating giant ships and facilitating transport and storage operations.

Advanced infrastructure to accommodate giant ships

The Mangabwani Port project includes the construction of modern facilities specifically designed to receive large cargo ships, which gives Tanzania a higher competitive edge in the maritime shipping sector.

The project also includes the development of advanced docks and smart operating systems that contribute to accelerating unloading and shipping operations and reducing ship waiting times.

Through this infrastructure, the Tanzanian government seeks to increase the efficiency of maritime services and improve the quality of logistics operations in line with modern international standards.

A power plant and fuel storage facility to enhance operational independence

One of the most important components of the project is the establishment of an integrated power station in addition to fuel storage facilities, which ensures the port operates with high efficiency without complete dependence on external networks.

This step is important to enhance the sustainability of operational processes and reduce potential disruptions.

The presence of fuel storage facilities within the port also enhances the speed of supplying ships with essential services, thus increasing the port's attractiveness to global shipping companies.

Reducing pressure on the port of Malindi and supporting the national economy

The project also aims to alleviate the increasing pressure on Malindi port, which is one of the country's vital ports.

With the operation of the Mangabwani port, shipping traffic will be distributed more efficiently, reducing congestion and increasing the speed of goods flow.

This project represents a strategic step to boost the Tanzanian economy, support regional trade, and solidify the country’s position as an important logistics hub in East Africa in the coming years.

Tanzania is distinguished by a network of strategic ports on the Indian Ocean coast that have made it a major maritime gateway to East and Central Africa, foremost among them the port of Dar es Salaam, which is the largest and most active, serving not only Tanzania but also landlocked countries such as Zambia, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo through extensive land and trade corridors.
