The Russian state-run agency Rosoboronexport, responsible for exporting weapons and defense equipment, has revealed a significant expansion of its activities within African continentThe total value of the contracts signed reached approximately $20 billion across 150 military deals, an indicator reflecting the growing Russian defense presence in Africa in recent years.

According to the company's data, military-technical cooperation agreements currently cover 46 African countries, making Russia one of the continent's most prominent military partners.
These partnerships range from supplying countries with military equipment and developing defense infrastructure to training and technical support programs.
Defense solutions and industrial localization
Rosoboronexport asserts that it does not limit itself to selling weapons, but also offers “customized defense solutions” tailored to the needs of each country, particularly in the areas of coastal protection, maritime patrols, and regional security.
The agreements also include opportunities for joint local manufacturing and technology transfer, along with support for research and development and maintenance of existing military systems.
Extensive display at defense exhibitions
The company highlighted its strong presence at the African Defence and Aerospace Exhibition (AAD 2024), where it showcased a range of its most prominent military equipment, including T-90S tanks, Smerch missile systems, self-propelled guns, and multi-purpose armored vehicles, reflecting the diversity of its defense products aimed at African markets.
Continuous expansion and strategic partnerships
The company confirmed that its cooperation with Africa has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years, with $4 billion worth of military industrial contracts signed with various countries, amid a growing trend among many African countries to modernize their military capabilities and strengthen their national security.
This Russian expansion into the African market reflects the continent's transformation into an arena of international competition in the field of defense industries, amid increasing demand to modernize armies and enhance security capabilities in the face of escalating regional challenges.
Russia’s expansion in Africa is not limited to the military dimension only, but extends to include strengthening Moscow’s political and economic influence within the continent, especially in light of increasing competition with other international powers for African markets.
The reliance of some African countries on Russian arms deals opens the door to long-term partnerships that extend beyond defense to include energy, technology, and infrastructure, thus strengthening the intertwining of interests between the two sides in the coming years.
