Burkina Faso: Allowing motorcycles to use bike lanes raises concerns

Controversy in Burkina Faso over motorcycles

Written by: Ayman Ragab

The decision by authorities in Burkina Faso to allow small motorcycles, including “Mio” motorcycles with capacities ranging between 50 and 125 cc, to use motorcycle lanes has sparked widespread controversy among road users, amid a division between supporters who see it as a step to alleviate congestion, and opponents who warn of its repercussions on traffic safety.

In the capital, Ouagadougou, a number of citizens welcomed the measure, considering that it contributes to regulating traffic and making better use of the infrastructure.

normal

Delivery driver Ben Watara said the decision seemed logical, especially since traffic is subject to clear laws, and he considered the inclusion of small motorcycles in designated lanes to be a normal thing.

Mio bicycles are among the most widespread means of transportation in cities, thanks to their small size and low operating and maintenance costs, making them a preferred option for commuting within urban areas.

Through this decision, the authorities aim to alleviate pressure on main roads by directing some motorcycle traffic to bike lanes, in an effort to reduce traffic congestion and improve traffic flow.

Concerns about accidents

On the other hand, a number of road users expressed concerns that the decision would have the opposite effect, due to the narrowness of the bicycle lanes and their inability to accommodate larger numbers of vehicles.

Serena Wedraogo said the current routes could become extremely congested, adding that only time will tell how successful this move will be.

Insufficient decision

Observers believe that the decision, despite its importance, will not be sufficient to address the worsening congestion crisis in cities, given the continuous increase in the number of motorcycles, which necessitates adopting more comprehensive solutions to develop the urban transport system.

For his part, Abdullah Maneh, a road user, believes that walking within bicycle lanes pushes drivers to be more cautious and disciplined, which may contribute to reducing accidents and improving road safety levels.
