Emmanuel Kembe... the voice of peace who transformed suffering into music

Emmanuel Mark Kimbe was born on January 9, 1969, in Wau. During his youth, his studies coincided with the escalation of the conflict in South Sudan and the accompanying displacement, famine, and human suffering, which prompted him to write and perform songs that addressed issues of injustice, marginalization, and inequality.

Kimbe’s journey into exile began in 1994 after he performed his famous song “Shenshen” during the sixth Khartoum International Music Festival. The song highlighted the suffering of citizens under the war and called for peace. This led to his arrest and forced departure from Sudan, to Ethiopia where he spent several years as a political refugee, during which he continued his artistic and awareness-raising activities.

He later moved to the United States of America, where he established an international artistic career during which he recorded six albums that carried messages calling for peace, love and coexistence.
