Ebola outbreak resurfaces in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Health sector emergency declared after Ebola outbreak

The Democratic Republic of Congo is experiencing a new outbreak of the Ebola virus in the northeastern province of Ituri, prompting a state of alert among local and international health authorities.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that laboratory tests have proven the presence of confirmed infections, with four deaths recorded so far, while medical teams continue to monitor dozens of suspected cases.

Details of the new outbreak

Dieudonné Mwamba, the director general of the National Institute of Public Health, explained that the outbreak is concentrated in the two health districts of Ruambara and Mongbwalo, where four deaths were recorded out of 20 samples tested in the capital, Kinshasa.

He added that there are more than 17 other cases under observation, reflecting the seriousness of the situation and the need for rapid intervention.

Security and societal challenges

Ituri province is rich in gold, creating a daily influx of people due to mining activities. However, this movement, coupled with years of armed conflict in the region, makes it difficult for medical teams to reach some areas and provide necessary care. These security challenges hinder efforts to control the spread of the virus.

Historical background of the outbreak

This was not the first outbreak in the country; last August, the central region experienced an outbreak that led to the death of at least 34 people before it was declared eradicated in December.

The country also recorded its most severe outbreak of the disease between 2018 and 2020, which killed about 2,300 people, making Ebola one of the most serious health challenges in the modern history of Congo.

International and local response

Health authorities in Kinshasa are working with international partners to strengthen the rapid response by sending specialized teams to follow up on suspected cases and intensifying community awareness campaigns on prevention methods.

Coordination is also underway with neighboring countries such as Uganda and South Sudan to prevent cross-border transmission of the infection.

Signs of the new outbreak

This outbreak represents a new test of the Congolese health system's ability to cope with epidemics amid difficult security and economic conditions.

Experts emphasize that controlling the disease requires broad international cooperation, especially since Ituri is a strategic region due to its natural resources and intensive population movement.
