UN envoy warns of humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan and calls for urgent international action
He stressed the need to strengthen support for refugees and for an urgent humanitarian response.

Prime Minister Allamaye Halina discussed the developments of the Sudanese crisis and its humanitarian and security repercussions on Chad and the region with the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, on Wednesday, in light of the continued influx of refugees fleeing the conflict raging in Sudan since April 2023.

The discussions focused on the humanitarian and security conditions related to the Sudanese crisis. Chad hosts hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees and plays a pivotal role in facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected, while simultaneously confronting the repercussions of instability on its eastern borders.
The meeting was preceded by a field visit by the UN envoy to the border town of Adre in Wadi Vera State, where he observed the situation of refugees and met with representatives of affected communities and humanitarian workers. The visit also enabled him to assess the extent of humanitarian needs and the challenges facing relief operations in the region.
At the end of his mission, Havist called on the international community to strengthen its humanitarian support and respond more effectively to the growing needs, warning of the risks of deteriorating humanitarian conditions if urgent measures are not taken to curb the worsening crisis.
He also expressed concern over the ongoing security challenges along the Chad-Sudan border.
For his part, the Chadian Prime Minister affirmed the government's continued interest in the humanitarian situation of Sudanese refugees, renewing his country's commitment to cooperate with the United Nations and international partners to ensure the protection of refugees and enhance programs for their humanitarian, social, and economic support.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, African Integration, and Chadians Abroad, Abdallah Saber Fadoul, along with a number of government members and Prime Minister's office officials.
