East African Power Pool enhances regional integration

The Council of Ministers of the East African Power Pool (EAPP) adopted a package of Strategic Decisions aimed at promoting regional integration in the energy sector, during the closing of the 22nd extraordinary meeting, hosted by the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, with the participation of the Minister of Power and Dams of the Republic of South Sudan, Engineer Agok Makur Kor.
The meeting witnessed extensive discussions on developing the institutional and organizational framework of the association, in light of the outcomes of the 37th meeting of the Steering Committee, which contributes to improving the efficiency of the regional electricity market and enhancing the level of cooperation among member states.
The ministers also discussed mechanisms for establishing an effective system for resolving disputes related to the operation of the regional electricity market, in a move aimed at supporting market stability and consolidating the principles of transparency and governance in the implementation of joint agreements.
The Council approved the review of the amended versions of the Intergovernmental Memorandum of Understanding (IGMOU), alongside the Inter-Utility Memorandum of Understanding (IUMOU), in preparation for their signing by member states, in order to support the expansion of cooperation and accelerate the implementation of regional electricity interconnection projects.
In conclusion to the meetings, the Council of Ministers emphasized the importance of commitment to implementing its decisions, as these are a fundamental pillar for strengthening institutional coordination and ensuring the effective application of joint policies and programs within the bloc.
South Sudan's participation in this meeting confirms its commitment to supporting regional integration efforts in the energy sector, enhancing cooperation with member states to develop electricity infrastructure, and expanding access to energy services, thereby supporting economic development pathways and improving the quality of services provided to citizens.
