Niger’s Interior Minister announced the suspension of the activities of 2,900 local and foreign non-governmental organizations and development associations, out of 4,700 registered.
The authorities in Niger criticize the lack of transparency of non-governmental organizations and accuse them of ”supporting terrorists,” meaning armed groups active in several regions.
Ban on NGOs
In 2025, Niger banned a number of local and international NGOs from operating in Niger, accusing them in particular of failing to publish their 2024 financial statements in the Official Gazette on time.

Interior Minister General Mohammed Tumba said: “We used to have 4,700 NGOs, today that number has dropped to 1,800.”.
He stated that suspending the activities of these associations falls within the framework of "purifying" this sector, and that "clear tasks have been assigned" to non-governmental organizations, and they should henceforth "align with national development priorities."
