Both parties condemned the news that the authorities of the Northwest region, called the Somaliland region, had opened an embassy to the Israeli occupation state in occupied Jerusalem, considering this step unacceptable and legally invalid, and even provocative to the feelings of the people of the Arab and Islamic worlds. They also stressed the need to join forces to confront this step.

Jamal Rushdi, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that both sides emphasized their commitment to supporting stability and peace in the region and the need to preserve Somalia’s sovereignty, stability, and territorial integrity, and not to allow any party to infringe upon the sovereignty of a member state of the League of Arab States, the African Union, and the United Nations.

Jamal Rushdi added that Abu Al-Gheit, for his part, affirmed the Arab League’s keenness to provide full support to Somalia in all the steps it will take to confront any pressures and attempts that threaten its sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting that the Arab League has repeatedly stressed in all its resolutions the unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia and the integrity of its territory, and its support for all the efforts of the Federal Government in promoting and activating the national dialogue to achieve political consensus and stability in a way that meets the interests and aspirations of the Somali people.

The Arab Republic of Egypt condemns in the strongest terms the illegal and unacceptable step taken by the so-called Somaliland region to open an alleged embassy in the occupied city of Jerusalem, in flagrant violation of international law and relevant international legitimacy resolutions, and in direct violation of the legal and historical status of the occupied city of Jerusalem.

Egypt affirms its complete rejection of any unilateral measures aimed at consolidating an illegal reality in occupied Jerusalem or granting legitimacy to any entities or arrangements that violate the rules of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, reiterating that East Jerusalem is occupied Palestinian territory since 1967, and that any steps aimed at changing its legal and historical status are null and void and have no legal effect.
