Mali sets trial dates for 3 prominent figures

The Court of Appeal in the financial capital has determined Bamako The trial dates for 3 prominent figures in the political, media and trade union arenas have been set, after long periods of detention, in cases that are of widespread interest within the country due to their political and human rights dimensions.

The trials include Adama Diarra, coordinator of the “Yeriolo” movement, known as “Ben Lcherfou”, journalist and political commentator Mohamed Youssouf Bathily, known as ”Ras Bath”, along with the general secretary of the prison guards’ union, Commander Daouda Konate.

Adama Diarra is scheduled to appear in court on July 27, 2026, where he faces charges of ”undermining the credibility of the state.”.

Diarra was arrested in September 2023 after publicly criticizing the possibility of extending Mali's transitional period. He was initially sentenced to two years in prison, with one year suspended, before an appeals court reduced the sentence in February 2024 to one year, half of which was suspended. However, his release was delayed after new charges were filed against him.

Bath's head of state will appear in court on August 10.

The court will hear the case of journalist and political commentator Mohamed Yousuf Bathily, known as Ras Bath, who has been in pretrial detention since March 28, 2023, on August 10, 2026.

Bath faces several charges, including criminal conspiracy, damaging the reputation of the state and its institutions through information and communication technology, as well as charges related to inciting racial, regional and religious hatred.

The investigating judge specializing in technology crimes had decided in March 2025 to continue his pretrial detention until the completion of judicial proceedings.

Trial of the prison guards' union leader

As for the general secretary of the prison guards' union, Commander Daouda Konate, his trial is scheduled to begin on August 3, 2026, after he was charged with inciting a popular uprising and endangering state security.

Konate had disappeared in Bamako in late October 2024, before authorities began a judicial investigation into statements he made criticizing the conditions and working circumstances of prison workers.

Widespread interest within Mali

These cases are being closely followed by the financial public opinion, given their connection to influential figures in the political, media and union scene, amid anticipation of what the trials will yield and their repercussions on the internal scene in the country.
