Togo opens its borders to African travelers without a visa

The decision came into effect immediately on May 18, and applies to citizens of all African countries holding valid national passports.
Authorities say travelers will now be allowed to stay in Togo for up to 30 days without a visa.
Togolese authorities said the move reflects the country's commitment to strengthening African cooperation and economic openness, as well as supporting relations between peoples, noting that the goal is to transform Togo into a regional hub for business, trade, culture and services in the heart of the continent.

In this context, Security Minister Calixte Patosi Madjolbeh explained that the decision embodies the state’s orientation towards supporting African integration and facilitating the movement of people, which strengthens economic and social ties between countries.
Togo joins a growing number of African countries, including Rwanda, that have eased travel restrictions in support of continent-wide mobility and integration efforts.

Despite this openness, the government confirmed that security and immigration procedures will remain in place, requiring travelers to fill out an electronic travel declaration form 24 hours before arrival and present it at land, air and sea entry points.
According to the authorities, the new policy will be applied to all border crossings in the country, as Togo seeks to strike a balance between facilitating travel and ensuring security control.

Togo's decision to abolish visas for African citizens comes within a growing trend within the continent towards promoting freedom of movement and facilitating the movement of individuals between countries, as part of efforts to achieve economic and regional integration. This step is seen as an attempt by Togo to strengthen its position as a regional hub for business and services, and to attract more trade and investment activity.

The decision also reflects a growing awareness among a number of African countries of the importance of removing bureaucratic restrictions on travel, as one of the factors affecting the revitalization of intra-regional trade and tourism.
