Celebrations for the United States' Independence Day were marred by a series of shootings in several states, resulting in at least six deaths and dozens injured, according to U.S. media reports.
8 injured in New York shooting
The network reported NBC News An armed individual opened fire on a family gathering during a barbecue in the Coney Island neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City, late Saturday evening, injuring eight people, including four children.
The New York Police Department reported that seven of the injured are expected to recover, while a 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition after being shot in the chest. The department explained that the suspect fled on foot, and efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend him.
Police added that the youngest of the injured is 16 years old, while the rest of the victims are between 16 and 26 years old.
One dead and 8 injured in Indiana
In Fort Wayne, Indiana, a shooting broke out after 3 a.m. Sunday, where police found the body of a woman upon arrival at the scene in the 2200 block of Oliver Street. Eight adults were treated for gunshot wounds described as not life-threatening, according to Fort Wayne police.
In a separate incident in the city of Gari in the same state, police responded to two reports of shootings on Sunday morning. One of the incidents resulted in the death of a 10-year-old child, while investigations are ongoing to uncover the circumstances of both incidents.
Two killed and three injured in California
In Compton, California, a man and a woman were killed and three others were injured in a shooting during an Independence Day celebration at an apartment complex in the 700 block of Laurel Street West, around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Authorities announced the deaths of the two victims at the scene of the accident, while the three injured – a man, a woman, and a girl – were taken to the hospital. The man's condition was described as critical, while the others sustained no serious injuries.
