The Dangote Refinery in Nigeria and the National Petroleum Company of the Republic of the Congo (SNPC) have begun discussions to establish a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening cooperation in oil refining and the supply of refined petroleum products, which will support energy security in Central African countries and enhance economic integration among African nations.

The discussions took place during a visit by a delegation from the Congolese company to the Dangote Refinery in the Lekki Free Zone in Lagos. The two sides discussed mechanisms for building long-term cooperation, including fuel supply, technical expertise exchange, and the development of supply chains for the energy sector.

The Congo seeks to diversify its fuel sources

The Director General of the Congolese National Oil Company, Maixent Raoul Ominga, affirmed that the Dangote refinery represents a strategic project for the African continent, noting that cooperation with it will help the Congo ensure a stable supply of high-quality petroleum products and reduce reliance on imports from outside the continent.

He added that the proposed partnership reflects an African trend towards strengthening cooperation between countries in the energy sector, achieving self-sufficiency and supporting economic development in the region.

Dangote: We work for Africa

For his part, Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote affirmed that the group prioritizes supporting industrial development in Africa, emphasizing its readiness to cooperate with African countries to meet their fuel and petroleum product needs.

Dangote said the refinery is not only targeting the Nigerian market but also aims to become a regional hub for providing clean fuel to the highest global standards, thereby contributing to reducing the continent's reliance on importing petroleum derivatives from foreign markets.

Massive refinery expansion plans

Dangote Group officials have revealed a plan to increase the group's refining capacity to 2.1 million barrels per day in the coming years. This includes boosting production capacity in Nigeria and establishing a new refinery complex in Kenya to serve East African markets, along with additional investments estimated at approximately $46 billion in the refining, cement, and fertilizer sectors between 2026 and 2028.

Experts believe these expansions will solidify the Dangote Refinery's position as one of the largest oil refining centers in the world and increase its capacity to meet the growing demand for fuel within the African continent.

A step toward enhancing African energy security

Analysts affirm that the potential partnership between Dangote Refinery and the Congo National Petroleum Corporation represents a model for economic cooperation between African countries, aligning with the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area, and contributing to the building of regional value chains for the energy sector.

This partnership is expected to help enhance energy security in Central Africa, reduce the costs of fuel imports, and improve supply stability, thereby supporting economic growth and industrial development in the region's countries.
