Burkina Faso strengthens its health system: 9 university hospital centers established in cooperation with the Food and Drug Authority

The government of Burkina Faso continues to implement its structural reforms to create a more efficient, modern and accessible healthcare system.
Following the Cabinet meeting on Thursday, July 30, 2026, important decisions were made to strengthen governance in the health sector and accelerate the development of hospital infrastructure across the country.
The first report adopted by the Council of Ministers concerns a draft decree approving the statutes of the Food and Medicines Authority of Faso. This decision provides the new institution with a suitable regulatory framework to effectively carry out its tasks. Through this step, the state strengthens the mechanisms for regulating and monitoring health products, contributing to better protection of the population and a sustainable improvement in the quality of healthcare.
Updating the national healthcare infrastructure
The Council also adopted a second report dedicated to specific projects for the Ministry of Health, reflecting the authorities' commitment to continuing to modernize the national healthcare infrastructure.
These projects relate to the technical preparations necessary for the establishment of nine regional university hospital centers.
This preliminary phase includes conducting basic technical studies and contracting with a company to prepare preliminary design studies and detailed design studies, two crucial steps to ensure the quality and sustainability of future facilities.
The total cost of these projects is estimated at one billion CFA francs, fully funded from the state budget for the fiscal year 2026. This financial commitment embodies the government’s determination to make sustainable investments in a healthcare system capable of meeting the growing needs of the population and providing modern infrastructure for healthcare workers.
By laying the groundwork for the creation of nine new university hospitals and strengthening the institutional framework of the Food Security Agency of Burkina Faso, the government reaffirms its commitment to building a more resilient, efficient, and effective healthcare system to meet current and future challenges. These decisions reflect a long-term vision that places the health of Burkinabe citizens at the heart of national priorities and contribute to the ambition of strengthening Burkina Faso's health sovereignty.
