Africa is redrawing the map of prosperity: These are the top 10 most successful countries in 2026, despite their varying economies.

The size is no longer  Economy The only true standard for measuring the success of countries is the concept of prosperity, which is now linked to the quality of life, the strength of institutions, the level of education and health care, in addition to freedoms and economic opportunities. This is what was revealed by the Legatum Prosperity Index 2026, which presented a more comprehensive vision for evaluating the performance of 167 countries around the world, going beyond traditional economic measures.

Prosperity exceeds GDP

The index is based on the evaluation of countries across three main axes, including development, freedom, and society, which are divided into ten indicators, including health, education, governance, investment environment, security, and social capital.

The 2026 edition also adopted a new methodology known as the “probability mean,” which prevents weaknesses in one sector from being offset by strong performance in another, making the ranking more accurate and fair.

Mauritius leads the continent

Mauritius continued to lead Africa’s most prosperous countries, ranking 45th globally, benefiting from a balanced performance in freedoms, institutional quality and social welfare, outperforming larger African economies.

Botswana came in second in Africa thanks to its political stability and sound economic management, while North African countries maintained a strong presence in the ranking, with Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria ranking among the top six on the continent, supported by improved development indicators and institutions despite economic challenges.

South Africa has a strong economy but faces social challenges.

Despite having one of the largest industrial economies on the continent, South Africa ranked seventh in Africa and 86th globally. The index indicated that its strong economic performance was not enough to offset challenges related to social cohesion and certain societal indicators, which impacted its overall ranking.

Ghana also topped the list of West African countries, ranking eighth in Africa, followed by Gabon and Senegal to complete the list of the ten most prosperous countries on the continent.

The message of the index: Prosperity begins with people.

The Legatum Index results reveal that sustainable prosperity is not only linked to high income or a strong economy, but also depends on building effective institutions, promoting freedoms, improving the quality of public services, and strengthening social cohesion.

The African experience confirms that countries that invest in people and good governance are able to achieve levels of prosperity that surpass larger economies, making balanced development the true path towards a more stable and growing future.
