This occasion comes at a time when the defense and security forces continue to carry out their operations to confront armed groups and extremist organizations, especially in border areas that witness frequent security threats, as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen security and stability and preserve the unity of Nigerien territory.

August 1st of each year is a national occasion to commemorate the founding of the Nigerien Armed Forces in 1960, following the country’s independence. This anniversary represents an opportunity to recall the military institution’s journey and development, and the role it has played in protecting the state and preserving its sovereignty for more than six decades.

In recent years, the armed forces have acquired an increasing role in confronting regional security challenges, especially with the rise of armed groups’ activities in the Sahel region, which has forced them to expand their deployment and enhance their operational readiness, in parallel with efforts to support internal security and protect borders.

The occasion also underscores the important role played by the military establishment in maintaining the cohesion of the state, in light of the political and security changes taking place in the Sahel region of Africa, and the challenges they impose that require continuous readiness and coordination between the various security agencies.

During this occasion, officials in Niger are keen to send messages of appreciation to members of the armed forces, affirming their status and role in protecting the country, while renewing the commitment to continue supporting the military institution and enhancing its capabilities in a way that contributes to consolidating security and stability.

The sixty-sixth anniversary of the founding of the Nigerien Armed Forces embodies a national milestone to commemorate the sacrifices of the military personnel who served their country, and to emphasize the continued performance of the military institution’s defense and security duties, as one of the fundamental pillars for maintaining Niger’s sovereignty and stability.
