The Mauritanian iron ore train is one of the most exciting means of transport in the world, not only because of its enormous length, but also because it represents a vital artery.  economically It is vital to Mauritania, as it transports millions of tons of iron ore annually from the heart of the desert to the export port on the Atlantic coast, in a journey that has become a symbol of resilience and development in the country.

One of the longest and heaviest trains in the world

The train can stretch for up to 3 kilometers and typically consists of 200 to 300 wagons designed to transport iron ore, with each wagon carrying approximately 84 tons of cargo. It is pulled by several powerful diesel locomotives capable of hauling thousands of tons across rugged desert terrain, making it one of the longest and heaviest freight trains in the world.


A 704-kilometer journey across the desert

The train departs from the Zouérat iron ore mines in northern Mauritania and travels approximately 704 kilometers to the port of Nouadhibou, where the iron ore is shipped to global markets, particularly Europe and Asia. The journey typically takes between 18 and 20 hours, depending on operating conditions and train traffic.

The lifeblood of the Mauritanian economy

The train is operated by the National Industrial and Mining Company (SNIM), Mauritania's largest mining company. Iron ore is one of the country's main exports, and the mining sector is a key pillar of the GDP and foreign exchange earnings, making the train a vital element of the national economy.

Although the train was designed primarily to transport iron ore, it includes passenger carriages, while some adventurers choose to travel on top of the open ore carriages for a unique desert experience, despite the challenges posed by dust, high temperatures, and strong winds.
