Coal mine explosion in Shanxi province

The Arab Republic of Egypt expressed its sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the People’s Republic of China for the victims of the coal mine explosion accident that occurred in Shanxi Province, which resulted in the death of dozens.
Egypt affirmed its full solidarity and support for the government and people of the People’s Republic of China in this tragic event, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
90 workers killed
At least 90 workers were killed, and dozens were injured inside the coal mine.

Xinhua News Agency reported that 247 workers were underground inside the Liuchinyu mine when the accident occurred at 19:29 local time.
State broadcaster CCTV reported that 123 workers were taken to hospitals, including 4 in critical condition, while 33 others were discharged after receiving treatment.
Rescue operations continue
The channel noted that intensive rescue operations continued until Saturday afternoon, broadcasting images of rescue teams and ambulances deployed around the mine.
The mine is located in Shanxi province, about 500 kilometers southwest of the capital Beijing, which is one of the major coal mining areas in China.
According to Chinese authorities, the accident was caused by carbon monoxide levels inside the mine exceeding permissible limits. This gas is one of the most dangerous toxic gases, as it is colorless and odorless, and is often produced by explosions of methane gas that accumulates due to poor ventilation inside mines.

The Chinese agency also confirmed that one of the officials of the company operating the mine was placed “under legal supervision” in connection with the incident.
A survivor recounts the details of the final moments
One of the surviving workers told Chinese television that he saw a thick cloud of smoke accompanied by a smell of sulfur, adding that he saw a number of workers lose consciousness from suffocation before he too collapsed.
The worker explained: “I lay there for about an hour, then I regained consciousness and called out to my colleagues who were near me so that we could get out.”.
The Chinese president called for mobilizing “all possible means” to treat the injured, and demanded extensive investigations to uncover the causes of the accident.
The Chinese president stressed the need to learn lessons from the incident and to strengthen occupational safety measures to prevent a recurrence of such disasters.
