The campaign was announced during an event held in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, where organizers emphasized that it represents an open invitation to Africans at home and in the diaspora to showcase their achievements and true stories, and to express a more diverse and positive reality that reflects the development and creativity taking place on the continent.

Speaking about the launch event in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, Muki Makura, executive director of Africa Without Filter, said the campaign aims to raise awareness among African people to showcase their own stories and reshape global perceptions of the continent, noting that the initiative is centered around trying to reshape the world's view of Africa.

He explained that it reflects how we Africans view ourselves, noting that this negative perception the world has of Africa has led to the loss of billions of dollars that could have been invested in the continent,” Makura stated at the press conference.

She noted that it urges the African people to challenge distorted stereotypes about Africa and promote authentic narratives that reflect the continent's progress, culture, and potential.

“Global perceptions of Africa as misinformation and outdated stereotypes continue to distort the image of the continent,” said Makura, noting that one of the worst famines Ethiopia experienced 40 years ago defined the image of the continent for an entire generation.

The campaign invites people to participate by sharing their stories, ideas, and issues that deserve more attention, using the hashtag #NotWaiting.

Participants can also sign the campaign statement and share their stories on the website.

He explained that the campaign will continue on the 25th of each month, creating a recurring moment in which Africans collectively flood the internet with stories of progress, creativity, innovation and opportunities from across the continent and the diaspora.

Faith Adiyambo, the African Union Commission’s chief communications officer for Agenda 2063, said the Not Waiting campaign embodies the energy of a generation that no longer waits to be seen, recognized, or defined by others. Adiyambo added, “Africans are already building the future they want, and this campaign helps to highlight that for us and the world.”
