Mogadishu condemns Israeli action in Somaliland

The Republic expressed Somalia The Federation strongly condemned an announcement by the Israeli Foreign Ministry regarding the appointment of a diplomatic representative in the northwestern region of the country, known as “Somaliland”, considering this move a clear violation of the state’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

A blatant violation of international law

The Somali government, in a statement issued by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, affirmed that this action constitutes a blatant violation of international law, particularly UN resolutions, as well as the founding principles of the African Union, the League of Arab States, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, all of which stipulate respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. It emphasized that Somalia is a unified and indivisible state within its internationally recognized borders.

A firm rejection of any recognition of "Somaliland".”

The Somali Federal Government reiterated its complete rejection of any attempts to grant diplomatic or political recognition to any part of its territory outside the authority of the central government.

She explained that “Somaliland” remains an integral part of the Somali state, and that any attempts to present it as an independent entity lack a legal basis and contradict the established international consensus.

Fears of regional repercussions

Somalia warned that such moves could contribute to destabilizing the region and encourage separatist tendencies, at a time when the government is continuing its efforts to strengthen state institutions, consolidate good governance, advance the national reconciliation process, and combat terrorism in cooperation with its international partners.

A call for retreat and international action

Mogadishu called on Israeli authorities to immediately reverse this decision and to respect Somalia's sovereignty, unity, and political independence. It also urged the international community, including the European Union, to reject any steps that would undermine the country's unity or legitimize separatist entities.

The Federal Republic of Somalia concluded its statement by affirming its full commitment to defending its national unity and preserving its sovereign rights, stressing that it will continue to use all available diplomatic, political and legal means, in accordance with the provisions of international law, to maintain its territorial integrity.
