The art community in Egypt, and the audience of cinema and television, celebrate the anniversary of his birth Cinema leader Television and theater in Egypt, the comprehensive artist Adel Imam, whose birthday is commemorated on May 17th of each year, as the artistic community celebrated his 86th birthday.

Adel Imam is considered the legendary artist and the greatest actor in Egypt for more than 40 years, during which he presented many successful works in the box office, series and plays.

The popularity of the Egyptian artist Adel Imam was not limited to the Arab world, but went beyond the borders of Egypt to create an exceptional presence within the African continent, where “The Leader” has become over the decades one of the most influential and widespread Arab artists, whether through his artistic works or his humanitarian activity.

Adel Imam enjoyed great popularity in the Maghreb countries, especially in Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and Libya, where his plays and films formed part of the artistic memory of an entire generation.

His name became associated with huge public performances that sometimes exceeded the capacity of the theaters, especially during the presentation of plays such as The Leader, The Boy Sayed the Worker and Bodyguard.

In the Tunisian capital, the play “Bodyguard” achieved a record attendance in 2000, estimated at more than 35,000 spectators in just 3 days, as part of the new millennium celebrations, in one of the largest Arab theatrical events that Tunisia has witnessed.

His shows in Morocco and Tunisia also saw tickets completely sold out as soon as they were released, with widespread black market sales, prompting some organizers to open additional stands to accommodate the crowds.

In the theater, his immortal role in the play “The School of Mischief” as Bahgat Al-Abasiri, the cheerful failing student who leads his failing classmates, is what made him a star.

After that, he performed many successful roles in plays such as “Shahed Mashafsh Haga”, ”El Wad Sayed El Shaghal” (The Servant Named Sayed), ”El Zaeem”, and ”El Hares El Shakhsi”.

High-level honors in North Africa

“The Leader” received several high official honors in North Africa, most notably the “Medal of Intellectual Merit” which was awarded to him by the late Moroccan monarch Hassan II in 1997.

He also received the National Order of Merit in Tunisia in 2016, in addition to being honored during the Carthage Film Festival, where he was awarded the Golden Tanit prize in recognition of his artistic career and his broad cultural influence.

Adel Imam’s presence in Africa was not limited to the artistic aspect, but extended to humanitarian activity, especially after his appointment as a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in 2000.

In this context, he participated in awareness campaigns on refugee and displaced persons issues in Africa, and produced a short documentary film in which thousands of refugees from several African countries, including South Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia, participated.

He also conducted field visits to refugee camps for people from the Horn of Africa in Yemen, particularly in the Aden and Abyan regions, highlighting the humanitarian situation of the displaced.

In 2004, Adel Imam participated in a joint humanitarian activity with Angelina Jolie, who was also a Goodwill Ambassador, where they distributed winter aid and toys to Sudanese refugees in the suburbs of Cairo.

This activity reinforced his image as one of the most prominent Arab artists who used their fame to support humanitarian causes within the African continent.

Indicative of his great artistic standing on the continent is his meeting with the late South African leader Nelson Mandela at an international event related to art and culture. The late Moroccan monarch Hassan II also awarded him the Order of Intellectual Merit in 1997 in recognition of his artistic career and his role in supporting Arab causes.

In 2016, the late Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi received him at the Carthage Presidential Palace and awarded him the National Order of Merit in the cultural sector in recognition of his career and artistic influence.

His filmography includes a number of films such as “We Are the Bus Type”, ”The Lawyer”, ”Terrorism and Kebab”, ”Bakheet and Adila”, ”Prince of Darkness”, ”A Groom from a Security Agency”, ”The Embassy in the Building”, ”Alzheimer’s”, ”Bobos”, and others. 

The journey of the leader of Egyptian artists began in the university theater when he was studying at the Faculty of Agriculture, before the year 1963, which witnessed his artistic breakthrough through the play “Me, Him and Her” starring the artist Fouad El-Mohandes, who chose him from among 90 actors, and his journey later extended, drawing a star that shone for a long time in the sky of African art.

His television debut was in 1978 with the series “Dreams of the Flying Boy”, followed by “Tears in Shameless Eyes” in 1980. 

After a long hiatus, he returned to television drama in 2012 with the series “Naji Attallah’s Squad”, continuing his annual presence in the Ramadan marathon with a number of successful series.

In 2018, Imam delivered outstanding performances in films such as “The Fortune Teller”, ”His Excellency”, ”Adly Allam’s Ghosts”, and ”Hidden Worlds”.

7 awards

Imam won 7 awards, including two awards from the Cairo National Film Festival for Best Actor for his roles in the films “The Terrorist” and ”The Yacoubian Building”. 

For his film “The Yacoubian Building”, he won the International Jury Prize at the Sao Paulo International Film Festival, and a special mention for Best Actor in a Feature Film at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The Dubai International Film Festival awarded him a Lifetime Achievement Award twice, in 2005 and 2008.

Imam also received the Golden Star Award in 2014 at the Marrakech International Film Festival, the Golden Tanit Award in 2016 at the Carthage Film Festival, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the first edition of the El Gouna Film Festival.

Despite being the most important comedian in the history of Egyptian cinema, he later presented serious dramatic works while maintaining his comedic style, embodying the suffering of ordinary citizens in the face of strong social and political pressures. 

Adel Imam, in every sense of the word, is a unique artist, not only at the top of the artistic pyramid, but also occupying a prestigious place in the hearts of millions of his fans in Egypt and the whole world.

In 2019, under the slogan “Celebrating Adel Imam’s birthday,” Tamer Morsi, CEO of United Media Services, signed a contract with the great Egyptian star to produce the series “Valentino.”.

Critics believe that the secret to Adel Imam's widespread popularity in Africa lies in his ability to combine popular comedy with political and social messages, which made his works understandable and close to a wide audience in Arab and African societies.

His sarcastic language and the "jokes" he became famous for also contributed to establishing his presence within popular culture, so that many of his cinematic phrases became expressions commonly used among young people in several Arab and African countries.

For more than 50 years, Adel Imam has remained one of the most prominent symbols of Arab soft power in Africa, combining popular appeal with cultural and humanitarian influence.
