Libya affirms its continental presence by participating in the proceedings of the seventh legislative session of the African Parliament.

Libya is participating in the work of the seventh legislative session and the first ordinary session of the African Parliament, which is being hosted by the city of Midrand in the Republic of South Africa during the period from July 17 to August 1, 2026, through a delegation that includes members of the Libyan House of Representatives, to participate in the meetings of the standing committees and the general sessions of the Parliament.

This participation comes within the framework of Libya’s keenness to strengthen its presence within the institutions of the African Union, and to contribute to the discussion of political, economic and developmental issues that constitute a priority at the continental level.

Participation in specialized committees

The Libyan participation included a presence in a number of specialized committees, including the Rules, Privileges and Discipline Committee, the Cooperation, International Relations and Dispute Resolution Committee, the Transport, Communications, Science, Technology, Energy and Industry Committee, in addition to the Education, Culture, Tourism and Human Resources Committee.

These committees discussed a range of issues related to the development of African parliamentary work, strengthening cooperation between member states, and supporting initiatives aimed at achieving development and stability on the continent.

Discussing strategic issues at the continental level

The session's work included a number of issues of common interest, including strengthening parliamentary diplomacy, developing cooperation between the African Parliament, the African Union and national parliaments, as well as discussing energy, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, strategic minerals, digital transformation, water and sanitation, education, culture and institutional reform.

The meetings also addressed developments in peace and security in Africa, the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, and discussed a number of model laws and initiatives aimed at supporting integration and development within the continent.

Workshops to enhance the legislative role

The Libyan delegation also participated in a number of workshops and specialized sessions, which focused on developing the legislative and oversight role of African parliaments, promoting economic integration, and preparing legislative frameworks that keep pace with the economic and technological transformations taking place on the continent.

This participation reflects Libya’s interest in exchanging experiences with African parliaments and benefiting from legislative experiences that support reform and development paths.

Strengthening African Cooperation

Libya’s participation in the work of the African Parliament confirms its commitment to strengthening cooperation within the institutions of the African Union, and to contributing to the achievement of the goals of Agenda 2063, in support of efforts for sustainable development, peace and stability on the continent.

The Libyan-African Integration Organization also appreciated the Libyan participation, stressing that an active presence within continental institutions contributes to conveying the Libyan vision, enhancing cooperation and integration among African countries, and supporting joint action to confront challenges and achieve development.
