Ghana is banking on traditional leaders to resolve lingering conflicts.

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama received a delegation from the Bono Regional Chiefs’ House during a visit to the Presidential Palace, where the two sides discussed a number of issues related to local development and strengthening community stability in the region.

During the meeting, President Mahama stressed the importance of resolving disputes related to traditional sheikhdom leadership, emphasizing that peace, stability and unity are essential pillars for accelerating development in various communities within the country.

The President called on traditional leaders to continue working through established customary and judicial channels to address outstanding disputes peacefully and in an orderly manner, ensuring the preservation of the social fabric.

The President renews his commitment to the development of the Puno region.

The Ghanaian president also affirmed his government’s commitment to supporting the development of Bono region, noting the continued implementation and completion of a number of investment projects in the areas of road infrastructure, health care, education, and agriculture, in addition to local economic development programs within various government initiatives.

Mahama explained that the government attaches particular importance to promoting balanced development between regions, which contributes to improving the standard of living, providing job opportunities and supporting the local economy, noting that the Puno region is one of the priority areas in the national development plans.

The President reaffirmed his commitment to the continued partnership between the government and the country’s traditional authorities, considering traditional leaders to be a pivotal element in achieving social stability and strengthening cohesion within local communities, given their historical role in managing the affairs of the population and resolving conflicts at the local level.

He pointed out that cooperation between the state and traditional institutions contributes to accelerating the implementation of development policies and ensuring that basic services reach citizens more efficiently, especially in rural areas that rely heavily on the traditional structure of community management.

For their part, members of the delegation from the House of Chiefs of the Bono region expressed their appreciation for the government’s interest in the region’s issues, stressing their readiness to continue cooperating with the state in order to promote peace and stability and support local development efforts.

The visit comes as part of a series of meetings held by the Ghanaian government with traditional leaders in various regions, with the aim of promoting community dialogue, addressing challenges related to local conflicts, and supporting the path of comprehensive development in the country.
