Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema inaugurated a $300 million hybrid renewable energy project at the Kindu Farm in Chongwe District on Tuesday, launching one of the largest Solar energy investments In the country.

250 MW solar power plant

The project, a collaboration between Kindu Farm and UK's Globe Lake, comprises a 250 MW solar power plant coupled with a 150 MW battery energy storage system. The hybrid design will provide clean energy during the day and distributeable electricity after sunset, improving grid stability as part of Zambia's efforts to diversify its energy sources and reduce its reliance on hydropower.

Reducing power outages

Once operational, the 250MW solar power plant will rank among the largest in South Africa, while the 150MW battery system adds vital storage capacity to manage peak demand and mitigate power outages.

This combined capacity directly supports national priorities, namely: providing the mining sector with the energy needed to expand copper production to 3 million tons by 2031, expanding industrial activity, and expanding access to electricity for homes.

The Kindu Farm project adds to a wave of planned energy development projects in 2026. It also signals growing UK-Zambia cooperation in green infrastructure, with construction expected to provide long-term employment and technical jobs for Zambians.
