Contemporary environmental challenges

It is World Day The Environment Day, celebrated on June 5th of each year, is an important international occasion aimed at raising awareness of the importance of protecting the environment and preserving the resources of planet Earth. This day comes to emphasize that the environment is not just an ocean in which we live, but rather the basis of life and its continuation for all living beings.
Planet Earth is under pressure... and the environment is crying out for help on its World Day.
The environment is an integrated system that includes natural elements such as air, water and soil, along with other man-made elements. This system provides the basic resources that humans depend on in their daily lives. However, these resources are facing great pressure today as a result of urban expansion, industrial progress and the excessive use of natural resources.

A threatened wealth and a global responsibility on its international day
Modern human activities have contributed to the emergence of numerous serious environmental challenges, such as pollution of all kinds, rising global temperatures due to greenhouse gas emissions, the decline in biodiversity, and the loss of natural balance in many ecosystems. These problems not only affect the environment but also extend to human health, the economy, and the future.

The concept of the environment is divided into two main types: a natural environment, which includes mountains, rivers, seas, and deserts, and a human environment, which is created by humans through cities, infrastructure, and economic activities. The stability of life depends on achieving a delicate balance between these two types to ensure the sustainability of resources.
In this context, the role of individuals, communities and governments in protecting the environment is highlighted through adopting sustainable practices such as reducing the use of plastic, recycling, rationalizing energy and water consumption and relying on clean energy sources.
The celebration of World Environment Day dates back to 1972, following the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, which marked a turning point in international attention to environmental issues and led to the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

This day aims to encourage collective action to address environmental challenges, primarily climate change, desertification and land degradation, especially in light of international reports indicating the widening scope of these crises.

The United Nations consistently affirms that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility that requires broad international cooperation to ensure a more sustainable and secure future for generations to come, and to preserve planet Earth as a habitable home.
