Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency has issued new warnings about the possibility of moderate flooding in several areas of Lagos and Ogun states during the current rainy season, urging residents to take urgent preventive measures.

The agency said that 15 local government areas in Lagos State and 19 areas in Ogun State face increased risks as a result of heavy rains expected in the coming weeks, given the weak drainage networks in some urban and semi-urban areas.

The authorities urged citizens to clean the drains, stay away from river areas, and avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, while adhering to official instructions issued by emergency services.

The threatened areas in Lagos State included Ajiji, Ababa, Ikja, Ikorodo and Lagos Island, while the affected areas in Ogun State included North and South Abkota, Ado-Ado/Ota, Ifo, Sagamo and other local areas.

Instructions for residents

The authority stressed that early preparedness is a key factor in reducing human and material losses, urging residents to stay informed through official channels and to promptly report any emergencies.

The warning comes amid forecasts of increased rainfall in southern Nigeria, raising fears of a repeat of the seasonal flooding crises that annually cause widespread damage and displacement of a number of residents.
