Egypt expresses its regret over the failure to agree on a final document at the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, the Arab Republic of Egypt expressed its regret for the missed opportunity for the international community to reaffirm its commitment to implementing the objectives of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons during the eleventh session of the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which was held from April 27 to May 22, 2026 in New York, and which concluded without agreement on a final document for the conference, despite the strenuous efforts by the participating countries in the conference, and the efforts made by the President of the Conference to bring the viewpoints closer to reach a consensus.
Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
And confirms Egypt In this context, the outcomes of previous review conferences remain in force, most notably the resolution on the establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, which was adopted by the 1995 Extension and Review Conference of the Treaty as a pivotal part of the deal that allowed the extension of the treaty.
Egypt also emphasizes the centrality of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in preserving and promoting international security since its adoption in 1968 until now, and calls for achieving the universality of the treaty by the accession of non-party states to it, especially in the Middle East region, as non-nuclear states, as this issue received the support of all participating countries in the last review conference.
nuclear states
And it continues Egypt In demanding that nuclear states take practical and serious steps towards implementing their obligations, under the treaty, towards nuclear disarmament, the implementation of the Non-Proliferation Treaty remains incomplete unless this noble goal is achieved, which will spare peoples the horrors of the catastrophic humanitarian and environmental consequences of the use of nuclear weapons.
Egypt also emphasizes the need to respect the inherent and inalienable rights of States Parties to the Convention to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy in various development fields, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
