A potential Egyptian-Senegalese partnership in the space sector

Cooperation in satellites and capacity building

Ambassador Khaled Aref held a meeting with Dr. Maram Kairi, President of the Senegalese Agency for Space Studies (ASES), to explore prospects for joint cooperation in the space sector, within the framework of efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation between Egypt and Senegal in the fields of science and technology.

During the meeting, the head of the Senegalese agency praised the remarkable progress Egypt has made in the field of space, stressing that the Egyptian Space Agency represents a leading model in the continent, thanks to its advanced infrastructure and sophisticated satellite programs.

Senegal is developing its space sector.

For his part, the ambassador expressed his appreciation for the steps taken by Senegal to develop the space sector, especially the establishment of a specialized national agency, and its openness to international partnerships and involvement in global space initiatives and programs.

In light of Egypt hosting the headquarters of the African Space Agency (AfSA) in Cairo, the ambassador stressed the importance of deepening bilateral and continental cooperation in this vital field, proposing a number of areas of joint work, including training Senegalese personnel within the Egyptian Space City, transferring technical expertise, in addition to studying the launch of a joint project to develop a satellite dedicated to monitoring the Earth and supporting the agriculture and natural resource management sectors.

He also called for strengthening Senegal’s participation in the programs and initiatives implemented by the African Space Agency, particularly in the areas of climate change, resource management and the development of African space systems.

For his part, Dr. Kairi welcomed the Egyptian proposals, stressing his country’s keenness to strengthen cooperation with Egypt and benefit from its accumulated expertise in the space sector.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the ambassador affirmed that Egyptian-Senegalese cooperation in this field stems from a shared African vision aimed at enhancing the continent’s technological sovereignty, supporting innovation, empowering youth, and harnessing space technology to serve the goals of sustainable development, particularly in the areas of agriculture, climate change adaptation, and sustainable resource management.
