On Thursday, the President of the Republic of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, presided over the commemoration of Martyrs' Day in the capital, Juba, reaffirming his government's commitment to improving the delivery of services to citizens, and stressing that the sacrifices of the heroes of independence will remain a source of inspiration for nation-building and the promotion of peace and development.

The national commemoration ceremony was widely attended by government officials, members of the security services, diplomats, veterans, and hundreds of citizens who gathered to honor the men and women who gave their lives for freedom, independence, and the establishment of the Republic of South Sudan.

Salva Kiir pledges to improve services for citizens

The event was held to commemorate the founding leader, Dr. John Garang de Mabior, and all the martyrs who lost their lives during the years of struggle for freedom, justice and independence, on an occasion that is considered one of the most prominent national milestones in which South Sudanese remember the history of their struggle and sacrifices for the establishment of their state.

President Salva Kiir stressed during the event that honoring the sacrifices of the martyrs is not limited to commemorating their memory, but requires continuing to work to achieve the aspirations of the citizens, foremost among which are strengthening security and stability, improving the level of basic services, and advancing development efforts throughout the country.

He stressed that the government will continue to implement its programs aimed at developing state institutions and raising the efficiency of services provided to citizens, in order to consolidate stability and achieve sustainable development, noting that the current stage requires the combined efforts of all the people of South Sudan to preserve the unity of the country and strengthen the national building process.

This year’s Martyrs’ Day commemoration comes at a time when the South Sudanese government is seeking to accelerate the pace of reforms and strengthen political and economic stability, amid internal challenges related to development and service delivery, as well as continuing to implement peace agreements and promote national reconciliation.

Martyrs' Day is an annual national occasion in South Sudan, commemorating the leaders and fighters who contributed to the national liberation movement, foremost among them Dr. John Garang de Mabior, who is regarded as the founding father of the state. On this occasion, South Sudanese renew their commitment to preserving the legacy of the martyrs and continuing to work towards building a state of peace, stability and prosperity.
