The file on the situation of Christian minorities in northern Nigeria has returned to the spotlight, amid ongoing attacks by the Boko Haram group and its affiliated armed factions, which target civilians, places of worship, and local communities, amid warnings of the continued security and humanitarian deterioration in the region.

Boko Haram, which was founded at the beginning of the current millennium and pledged allegiance to ISIS in 2015 before factions later split off, is active in the northeastern states of Nigeria, where it has carried out killings, kidnappings, and displacement operations targeting Muslims and Christians alike over the past years, in addition to attacks against government forces.

Reports from human rights and humanitarian organizations indicate that some attacks have targeted churches and Christian communities. These include the kidnapping of clergy and civilians, with financial ransoms demanded for their release. The attacks have also led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of residents from conflict areas, at a time when local communities are suffering from a lack of basic services and high poverty rates.

Experts in African affairs believe that the continued activity of armed groups is due to a set of factors, including the fragility of security situations, the vastness of rural areas, the spread of unemployment and poverty, and weak development, which provides extremist organizations with opportunities to recruit and attract new members.

Since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took office, the Nigerian government has announced the continuation of military operations against Boko Haram and other armed groups, asserting progress in reclaiming some areas and dismantling several of the organization's strongholds. However, sporadic attacks continue, prompting observers to call for enhanced security measures, alongside the adoption of development programs to address the economic and social causes contributing to the ongoing violence.

At the same time, human rights organizations emphasize that protecting all civilians, regardless of their religious or ethnic affiliations, is an urgent priority, calling for investigations into violations, bringing those responsible to justice, and providing support for victims and displaced persons.

Observers warn that the continuation of violence in northern Nigeria not only threatens the country's internal security but also impacts the stability of the West African region, given the growing activity of transnational armed groups. This necessitates regional and international cooperation to confront terrorism, promote development, and consolidate principles of coexistence and the protection of all citizens' rights.
