Member states of the International Criminal Court vote to dismiss prosecutor Karim Khan
A historic decision after a majority vote by member states

The member states of the International Criminal Court voted to remove British prosecutor Karim Khan from his post, after the decision received the support of a majority of the countries participating in the vote, against the backdrop of accusations of sexual misconduct, which Khan categorically denies.
The decision is unprecedented in the history of the court, as it is the first time that a court prosecutor has been dismissed while in office.
According to the results of the vote, 82 out of 125 member states supported the dismissal decision, while 13 countries opposed it and 11 countries abstained from voting, which led to the start of procedures for selecting a new prosecutor for the court in the coming period.
Accusations denied by Karim Khan
The vote came after an internal investigation into allegations of an inappropriate relationship between Karim Khan and a female court employee.
Despite his repeated denials of all the accusations, the competent authorities within the court recommended his dismissal, considering that the facts warranted ending his term in order to preserve the credibility of the institution.
Khan’s defense team confirmed that their client will appeal the dismissal decision through available legal procedures, stressing that the investigations did not provide him with sufficient legal guarantees, and that he still maintains his innocence.
The cases before the court are ongoing.
International law experts have confirmed that the dismissal of the prosecutor will not affect the cases currently being considered by the court, including arrest warrants issued in a number of international cases, as these decisions remain within the jurisdiction of the court's judges and are not related to the person of the prosecutor.
The Public Prosecution will also continue to perform its duties through the interim leadership until a new Public Prosecutor is elected, ensuring that investigations and judicial proceedings continue without interruption.
New challenges facing the court
The dismissal comes at a time when the International Criminal Court is facing increasing political pressure over a number of high-profile international cases, which presents the institution with challenges related to maintaining its independence and enhancing the confidence of member states in its work.
Observers believe that choosing a new prosecutor will be an important step to restore stability to the court and ensure the continuation of its role in investigating war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, in accordance with its mandate under the Rome Statute.
A new phase for the International Criminal Court
Experts expect that member states will begin consultations in the coming months to choose a successor to Karim Khan, as the court is keen to restore the confidence of the international community and continue its work on open cases around the world.
Experts confirm that the next phase will be crucial for the court, not only in terms of choosing a new leadership, but also in strengthening standards of transparency and accountability within international justice institutions.
