The International Red Cross renews its commitment to supporting Zimbabwe

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade received ZimbabweProfessor Dr. Amon Murwera, today, presented the introductory papers of the new Resident Representative of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in Zimbabwe, Cubano Benjamin Masilo.

During his meeting with the new representative, Minister Murweira praised the strong and longstanding cooperative relationship between the Government of Zimbabwe and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, since the organization’s office was opened in the capital, Harare, in 1981.
The Foreign Minister expressed the Zimbabwean government’s appreciation for the support provided by the Union in the areas of humanitarian assistance, disaster risk reduction, food security enhancement, and health emergency response, noting the prominent role played by the Union during major national crises, such as Cyclone Idai and the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as supporting the repatriation and reintegration of Zimbabwean citizens returning from South Africa.

Professor Moreira assured the new representative of the government’s continued commitment to implementing policies and measures aimed at strengthening the social protection system and improving the standard of living of citizens in Zimbabwe.
For his part, Cubano Benjamin Masilo congratulated the Zimbabwean government on its election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period 2027-2028, considering it an important diplomatic achievement.
Masilo reaffirmed the International Federation’s commitment, in cooperation with its local partner, the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society (ZRCS), to continue supporting humanitarian efforts in the country, expressing his gratitude to the government for the continued trust and cooperation that enabled the Federation to provide urgent relief assistance to flood victims in the Pitbridge and Chiridzi districts during 2026, as well as providing immediate assistance to citizens returning through the Pitbridge border crossing.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is one of the world’s largest humanitarian networks, comprising 191 national societies, including the Red Cross Society of Zimbabwe, and relying on a global network of more than 16 million volunteers working within local communities to provide humanitarian assistance and respond to disasters and crises around the world.
