A ceremony was held to commemorate the fifth anniversary of his passing. Former President of Chad Idriss Deby Itno, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters today, Monday.

The Prime Minister, Ambassador Alamaye Halina, presided over the commemoration ceremony on behalf of Marshal Mohamed Idriss Deby Itno, President of the Republic of Chad.

The ceremony was attended by the Secretary General of the National Salvation Movement, Aziz Mohamed Saleh, members of the movement’s National Health Council, heads of key institutions in the Republic, members of the government, members of the Senate and House of Representatives, diplomats, representatives of international organizations accredited in Chad, as well as the family of the deceased and a large number of his admirers.
Death of Idriss Déby
Idriss Deby died following clashes with rebels in the north of the country in April 2021.
Deby was then on track to win a sixth presidential term, after elections were held that same month in which he received 80 percent of the vote.
Debby died at the age of 68, and he is considered one of tallest leaders He ruled in Africa and had come to power in 1990.
He pledged to bring peace and security
During his last election campaign, he pledged to bring peace and security to the region, but his promises were undermined by attacks launched by rebels.
Deby went to the front lines to visit troops fighting rebels based across the border in Libya, a group calling itself the “Front for Change and Concord in Chad”.
The group attacked a border post on election day and was advancing towards the capital, N'Djamena.
Following that, state television announced that President Deby “breathed his last in defense of a sovereign state on the battlefield.”.
