In a striking judicial development that sheds new light on one of the most tragic educational accidents in KenyaA Kenyan court has charged eight female students with murder in connection with a horrific fire that broke out in a dormitory at Utomi Girls' Secondary School, killing 16 of their colleagues and injuring 79 others. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the circumstances of the incident, which shocked the country and reignited debate about the safety of boarding schools.

The Public Prosecution stated that the eight accused appeared before the Chief Magistrate of the Kibera Court in Nairobi, Diana Kavedza, where they all pleaded not guilty to the charges against them, according to a statement issued by the Director of Public Prosecutions on X.

The fire that broke out in the student dormitory resulted in the deaths of 16 girls and the injury of 79 others. The students' ages range between 15 and 18 years old.

The fire broke out at Otumishi Girls' High School in Gilgil town, Nakuru County, located in the Rift Valley region of western Kenya, causing shock within the local community.

During a memorial ceremony held at the Gilgil Stadium, clergymen stood beside the coffins of the victims in a moving scene, with the students' families in attendance.

Judicial authorities have not yet provided any additional details about the circumstances of the case, while investigations are still ongoing.

The incident has once again highlighted safety issues within Kenyan boarding schools, amid recurring fire incidents sometimes linked to student protests or poor safety measures.

The incident has also sparked widespread debate about the conditions in boarding schools, especially after several fatal fires have occurred in recent years.

In 2024, a fire at Nyeri County's Mois High School in Indarasha killed 21 children, while 2001 saw one of the country's worst fires when 67 students died at Kangoi Secondary School outside Nairobi, an incident attributed to arson.
