Somali referee Omar Artan, whose story has caused a great deal of controversy in recent days, will receive his full salary as a referee in the FIFA World Cup.

The decision comes despite Artan being barred from entering the United States and participating in the tournament. He was forced to travel to his home country after authorities in the United States, which is co-hosting the tournament with Mexico and Canada, stated that he had “connections to suspected members of terrorist organizations.”.

The BBC reported on Sunday, citing informed sources, that the best referee in Africa for 2025 will receive his full financial entitlements for the tournament, despite not officiating any matches.

In a move seen as a clear criticism of FIFA, the organizer of the World Cup, UEFA announced that, following the decision to ban him from entering, Ertan will referee the Super Cup final between Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain and Europa League winner Aston Villa next August.
