A new push to revive struggling infrastructure

Written by Omnia Hassan
In a move reflecting the growing role of BRICS financial institutions, South Africa On a $1 billion loan from the New Development Bank (NDB), aimed at supporting and upgrading infrastructure in the country's eight largest urban municipalities, amid growing challenges in the basic services sector.
Funding targeting water, electricity, and sanitation
The new funding will be directed towards implementing vital projects including the development of water and sanitation networks, the improvement of electricity distribution systems, and the enhancement of waste management services in a number of major cities, including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Tshwane, Ethekwini and Nelson Mandela Bay.

This support comes at a time when many municipalities are facing recurring crises as a result of outdated infrastructure, leading to water and electricity outages and a decline in the level of services provided to citizens and businesses.
A municipal crisis threatens the economy
South African cities have suffered for years from weak investment, a backlog of maintenance work, and delays in development projects, which has affected the quality of basic services. Johannesburg, the country's largest economic city, is a prime example of this after experiencing a series of water outages over the past two years.
Economists believe that the continued deterioration of infrastructure raises operating costs for companies and negatively affects the investment and productivity environment, making addressing these problems an economic priority and not just a service issue.
Part of a broader development plan
The loan is part of a broader strategy adopted by the South African government to modernize infrastructure and boost economic growth, given the government's limited financial resources and increasing pressure on the public budget.
The financing is also in line with the goals of the National Development Plan 2030, which places modern infrastructure at the forefront of priorities to achieve growth, create jobs and improve living standards.
BRICS Bank strengthens its development presence
This funding underscores the growing role of the New Development Bank, established by the BRICS countries, as a major source of financing for development projects in emerging economies. It also reflects the increasing cooperation among the bloc's member states and their efforts to expand their influence within the global financial system.
For millions of South Africans suffering from service disruptions, this loan represents a glimmer of hope for improving quality of life and restoring the efficiency of vital facilities on which both the economy and society depend.
