Ghana celebrates UN peacekeeping forces

I celebrated Ghana On the 78th anniversary of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, an official flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony was held on May 29, 2026, at the Presidential Palace under the theme of Investing in Peace, reaffirming Ghana’s unwavering commitment to supporting security and stability efforts in conflict zones around the world. This celebration serves to highlight the sacrifices made by peacekeepers to protect civilians and promote peace, while also acknowledging Ghana’s active role in numerous United Nations missions.

Deputy Foreign Minister, the Honorable James Giaqi Quayson (Member of Parliament), stressed in his speech that peace requires a deliberate commitment, strategic investment and collective action.

He noted that in the face of global challenges such as terrorism, political instability and climate-related security threats, UN peacekeeping operations remain indispensable.

He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to international peace and security through its continued contribution to United Nations peacekeeping missions.

He highlighted the role of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre in promoting peace support operations.

He also called for enhanced cooperation between the United Nations, the African Union and other partners, noting that investing in peace is ultimately an investment in the shared future of humanity.

For his part, the UN Resident Coordinator, Zia Chowdhury, praised the peacekeepers for their dedication and sacrifices in serving in some of the most challenging environments in the world.

He acknowledged the challenges facing the global security environment and the accompanying resource constraints, stressing that UN peacekeeping operations remain one of the most effective tools the international community has to protect civilians, support political solutions and maintain stability.

Therefore, he called on member states to provide sustained political and financial support for peacekeeping operations. He added that investing in peace is more cost-effective than dealing with the aftermath of war.

He also highlighted Ghana’s long-standing contribution to international peace and security, reporting the deployment of more than 1,900 military and police personnel across eight UN missions, as well as Ghana’s leading role in promoting women’s participation in peacekeeping operations.

He praised the peacekeepers who lost their lives while performing their duty.

According to the report distributed by the APO Group on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ghana, the ceremony brought together members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, traditional authorities, representatives of security agencies, students and members of the media to honor the peacekeepers and reaffirm Ghana’s commitment to global peace and security.
