Kenyan lawyers announce strike to protest judicial corruption and delays in case resolution

Thousands of lawyers in Kenya went on a nationwide strike to protest what they described as continued corruption within the judiciary and delays in resolving cases, demanding urgent reforms to strengthen judicial independence and improve the efficiency of the justice system.

The Kenya Law Society said the strike comes as part of defending the rule of law and the right of citizens to fair trials within a reasonable timeframe, stressing that the continuation of problems within the judicial system directly affects citizens' confidence in state institutions.

Lawyers are demanding swift resolution of the cases.

The strike participants stressed that the slow pace of litigation procedures has become a major challenge for litigants, as some cases take years before final judgments are issued, which leads to the accumulation of files in the courts and increases the suffering of citizens and companies waiting for their disputes to be resolved.

The lawyers pointed out that reforming the justice system is not limited to combating corruption only, but also includes developing work mechanisms within the courts, providing a sufficient number of judges, and speeding up judicial procedures to ensure that justice is achieved in a timely manner.

Accusations of obstructing reform efforts

The Kenyan Law Society accused a number of officials within the judiciary of obstructing reform efforts, demanding transparent investigations into allegations of corruption and decisive action against anyone found to be involved in any violations that compromise the integrity of the judiciary.

The association affirmed that it will continue to press for the implementation of the required reforms, stressing that the aim of the strike is to protect the independence of the judiciary and enhance citizens’ confidence in the judicial system, not to disrupt the course of justice.

Concerns about the impact of the crisis on the judicial system

Observers believe that the continued dispute between lawyers and the judiciary may affect the work of the courts in the coming period, especially in cases that require a quick resolution, which may increase the pressure on the judicial system and delay the resolution of many cases.

Legal experts also warned that continued delays in addressing shortcomings within the judiciary could affect the investment climate and citizens' confidence in justice institutions, stressing that an independent and effective judiciary is one of the most important pillars of stability and the rule of law.

Calls for dialogue and an end to the crisis

The Kenya Law Society called for a direct dialogue with judicial officials to find practical solutions to the crisis, with a clear plan to implement the required reforms, including enhancing transparency, expediting litigation procedures, and combating corruption within judicial institutions.

The Kenyan public is awaiting the results of this move, amid growing demands for reform of the justice sector, as it is one of the most important institutions responsible for protecting rights and establishing the rule of law in the country.
