The President of Djibouti receives a special envoy from his Mauritanian counterpart carrying a written message.

A written message from the President of Mauritania to the President of Djibouti

President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti received a special envoy from Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday morning.

The special envoy, Dr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Mauritanians Abroad of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, carried a written message from the Mauritanian President to the President of the Republic of Djibouti.

Condolences and sympathy

The message included conveying the sincerest feelings of brotherhood and appreciation from President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani to President Ismail Omar Guelleh, along with offering his condolences and sympathy following the painful loss suffered by the President’s family recently with the death of one of its prominent members.

In his message, the Mauritanian President also expressed his best wishes to the people of Djibouti for continued progress and success, coinciding with the Republic of Djibouti’s celebrations of the forty-ninth anniversary of its National Independence Day.

The meeting was not limited to delivering the message, but also provided an opportunity to exchange views on developments in the two regions to which the two countries belong, in addition to discussing a number of issues of common interest.

In a statement to the press following the meeting, Mauritanian Foreign Minister Dr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug affirmed that «Djibouti and Mauritania share many common interests in the African, Arab and Islamic spheres.».

He added that the talks highlighted the convergence of views between the two countries regarding the pivotal role played by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation as a distinguished framework for cooperation and diplomatic coordination among member states, including Djibouti and Mauritania.

The strength of friendship and cooperation

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the official spokesperson for the government, Abdulkader Hussein Omar, who praised the strong relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries and the two brotherly peoples, reiterating Djibouti’s keenness to strengthen areas of cooperation and coordination and expand the prospects of partnership with the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

The Mauritanian Foreign Minister was accompanied during his meeting with President Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed by the former Mauritanian Foreign Minister and his country’s current candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, which will be re-occupied in the coming period.
On the Djiboutian side, the meeting was attended by the Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the Republic, Ms. Fathia Jama Oudine, and the Director of the Department of Arab Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Mohamed Doualeh Weleh.
